The Spanish Contemporary Jeweler’s group Joyas Sensacionales in dialogue with two significant pieces by the Greek Visual Artist Giota Vorgia, open the new season at Uni.versus Art Room.

ABOUT JOYAS SENSACIONALES:

• Short statement by Carme Roher:

“To speak about water is to speak about life, about an essential element. In our Mediterranean region, since ages ago, it has also meant speaking of shortage, and today more than ever.

For mankind, water has traditionally meant both hard labour and an important cultural element: searching, storing, handling water, studying its chemistry, its biology, the living beings it sustains, the space it occupies, and transforms has been a fundamental activity throughout history in any culture.

It also plays a leading role in mysticism and rituals: to welcome life, calm souls, to beseech the gods and patron saints for protection against water immensity and sometimes uncontrollable power.

The importance of water has been reflected throughout history in all cultures and social groups and has been underlined in all the fields of knowledge and art.

When speaking of water, both personal and collective feelings, memories, and experiences come to our minds.

All these ideas and feelings have motivated us to work on the “About water” exhibition in order to share thoughts, reflexions and concerns and to develop individual pieces in our own personal creative language just to see where water can lead us to.”

• Bio:

“Joyas Sensacionales” was created in 2008 by Silvia Walz at the Perill workshop, with the purpose of creating a platform where creators could find answers to some of the multiple questions, they often had to ask themselves in isolation in their own studios.

We began by using themes or ideas as a starting point – concepts that each of us could develop in our own way, a common thread connecting our personal work.

Initially, the themes were focused in sensations – such as danger or lightness – which is the origin of the name “Sensacionales”.

We currently operate as an open group with shared coordination. We have maintained the practice of working about a specific theme and organizing group exhibitions. We have exhibited at various galleries in Catalonia, Spain, Germany, France, Greece, and Canada, among other places

ABOUT GIOTA VORGIA

In dialogue with the jewelry on show, two significant works by the greek visual artist GIOTA VORGIA evoke the symbolic and purifying essence of the sea – an elemental presence that has always influenced the human psyche.

• Short Statement by Giota Vorgia

Giota Vorgia, whose seascapes touch us deeply, writes about the source of her inspiration and the recurring theme in her work:

“What inspires me is the sea stone – the pebble. I am intrigued by the stability of the stone and the movement of the water, which imperceptibly sculpts and transforms it, always in harmony with the mood of the sky and the play of light.

As I step on the pebbles, I feel present. I am. There is tremendous beauty in ‘nowness’.

In Greek, kosmos [world, universe] is linked to kosmema, meaning ‘jewel’ or ‘ornament’.

To be present in the kosmos is a gift. I feel this bliss of being in the world, and I want to capture it in my paintings.

I always seek to draw the viewer into this luminous space of the eternal moment, which is forever new.”

Giota Vorgia is an Athens-based visual artist whose painting practice explores the relationship between nature, time, light, and presence.

For more than two decades, she has developed a distinctive body of work centered on stone, water, and their continuous transformation. Stone suggests stability and endurance, while water introduces movement
and change. Through their interaction, Vorgia reflects on the tension between permanence and impermanence, inviting the viewer to slow down, observe more closely, and become aware of the present
moment.

Her work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, the United States, and Asia, and is held in private and public collections around the world. Over the years, her practice has received international recognition, first awarded by Texas State University, and has been presented in major exhibitions, including the London Art Biennale.
Giota Vorgia lives and works in Athens.
