Hoyeon Chung - South Korean

bio:

Hoyeon Chung is a prominent South Korean studio artist and jewelry designer based in Seoul. A graduate of Kookmin University, where she also completed her doctoral studies, Chung has developed a worldwide reputation for her innovative use of non-traditional materials. Her work is characterized by the use of semi-transparent polyester mesh, which she transforms into intricate, three-dimensional structures. Chung’s pieces have been exhibited in major galleries and museums internationally, and she is considered a leading figure in the contemporary Korean craft scene, bridging the gap between textile art and wearable sculpture.

statement:

The work of Hoyeon Chung is an exploration of space, volume, and the illusion of weight. Utilizing polyester mesh as her primary medium, she constructs wearable objects that possess a remarkable architectural presence while remaining incredibly light and ethereal. Her creative process involves a meticulous layering and folding technique, where flat surfaces are transformed into complex, geometric volumes. Through the use of transparency and overlapping colors, Chung creates a sense of depth and movement that changes depending on the light and the viewer's perspective. For her, jewelry is not a solid mass, but a "spatial drawing" that interacts with the human body. By deconstructing the traditional boundaries of jewelry, she seeks to capture the intangible—making the air and the space within her structures as much a part of the piece as the material itself.
