Karin van Paassen - The Netherlands

bio:

I have worked as a freelance curator for 40 years, initiating and organizing exhibitions and cultural and educational projects in the Netherlands and abroad on topics including fashion, jewelry and accessories. For 13 years, I have been designing and making black porcelain jewelry. I exhibited in group exhibitions in France, Italy, Romania and the Netherlands in galleries and museums. In 2021, a piece of jewelry was selected for the Ceramics Triennale at the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn (Netherlands). My work was selected several times for exhibitions in China. Currently, my work is part of a travelling exhibition in China. My work has been published regularly in professional journals and included in museum - and private collections. I give lectures on the history of Dutch jewelry design and my own jewelry.

statement:

Silence Emptiness and silent pain caused by a broken and partially repaired body due to technical interventions. Grief and pain can cause mental emptiness, but not for me. I depict my physical and mental pain in my jewelry by telling stories about my injured and repaired back. Using soft-touch black porcelain clay, I shape parts for jewelry such as screws, vertebrae, eggs, nails, etc. Finally, there is the hardness of the fired pieces and I start making jewelry. With these style elements, I combat the emptiness that pain can cause. The hardness and softness of horsehair are always indispensable. The tactility of porcelain is often perceived as hard, not for me. Fighting emptiness with beauty. I connect my invisible inner world with the visible outer world.
